Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio, commonly known as Atalanta, is an Italian football club located in Bergamo, Lombardy. The club competes in Serie A, having achieved promotion from Serie B during the 2010–11 season.
The club is affectionately nicknamed the Nerazzurri and the Orobici. Established in 1907 by Swiss students within the gymnasium of the liceo classico, Atalanta dons blue-and-black vertically striped shirts, accompanied by black shorts and black socks. The club’s home ground is the Gewiss Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 21,300. In Italy, Atalanta is occasionally referred to as Regina delle provinciali (queen of the provincial clubs) to highlight the club’s remarkable consistency among Italian clubs not situated in a regional capital, having competed 58 times in Serie A, 28 times in Serie B, and merely once in Serie C.
The club achieved victory in the Coppa Italia in 1963 and advanced to the semi-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1988 while still participating in Serie B. This accomplishment remains the best ever recorded by a non-first division club in a significant UEFA competition, alongside Cardiff City. Atalanta has also partaken in four editions of the UEFA Europa League (formerly known as the UEFA Cup), successfully reaching the quarter-finals during the 1990–91 season.
The club earned qualification for the 2019–20 UEFA Champions League, marking their inaugural participation in the competition’s history, as they secured 3rd place in the 2018–19 Serie A season. This achievement represented the highest league finish in the club’s history.
